Wu Hsing-kuo is currently the Artistic Director of Contemporary Legend Theatre (CLT). A versatile performing artist, Wu Hsing-kuo crosses the fields of traditional opera, dance, modern theatre, cinema, and television. In 1986, Wu Hsing-kuo and a group of enthusiastic friends founded the CLT and revitalized traditional Chinese theatre by adapting Western classics to the styles and techniques of Peking opera. Wu attracted enormous attention with CLT’s debut The Kingdom of Desire, adapted from Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Wu also participates regularly in international festivals and has performed at the Festival d’Avignon, the National Theatre in UK, and Lincoln Center in New York. Wu is generally recognized as a pioneer in cross-cultural performance. The UK Guardian acclaimed him as “Taiwanese answer to Orson Welles." The Japanese Daily Yomiuri also praised Wu’s creation as strong and deep, “besides, his excellent techniques enrich the layers of play." In 2007 and 2008, Wu was twice invited by New York’s Metropolitan Opera to perform with the well- known opera singer Placido Domingo in the acclaimed production “The First Emperor" by Tan Dun.

As a holistic performing artist exemplifying total theatre, Wu continues to challenge himself. His influence is wide and profound.
