Tsai Erh Jung majored in chemical engineering in college and entered the high-tech industry after graduation. However, he decided to return to Beigang and devoted himself to the art of paper sculpture when his father had a stroke. This decision from engineer to paper sculptor was life changing.
Tsai not only studied the traditional skills of paper sculpturing, but also put a lot of efforts on preserving methods of paper works.
In 1998, Tsai took over his father’s career and determined to develop the skills of making paper statue of traditional deities. After spending almost six years on studying ancient books about paper and overcoming many difficulties, Tsai has now revived the ancient methods of making paper statue of deities and become one of the few masters with this skill that was once lost.
